In this episode, we talk with Jeanne McKinney, author of Triumph Over the Taliban: The Untold Story of US Marines’ Courageous Fight to Save Camp Bastion. Jeanne is an award-winning military journalist and a military documentary filmmaker. Her focus and passion are telling the legendary stories about United States active-duty military members fighting to keep America and her allies safe and free. McKinney offers an inside look at men and women who do the hard and very dangerous job of counterinsurgency to stop and disrupt the plans of the world’s most notorious terrorist groups. She is in the final stages of writing, directing, and producing a three-part documentary series that follows the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Afghanistan. McKinney has won multiple San Diego Press Club Excellence in Journalism Awards, including eight First-Place honors. The President’s Own Marine Band performed an original score for her film series at a World Premiere in August 2022.
Gregg A. Sturdevant enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1975 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in July 1979. He then returned to school, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Southeast Missouri State University in was commissioned an officer in the USMC. Upon completion of The Basic School, he reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in April 1984. Sturdevant has served in various operational squadrons and assignments including commanding officer of HMM-165 from July 2001 to May 2003. He then served as Commanding General of the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) based at the Bastion/Leatherneck Complex from February 2012 through February 2013, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom 12 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
In an attack on Camp Bastion by 15 Taliban fighters on 14-15 September 2012, two US service members, Lt. Col. Christopher Raible and Sgt. Bradley Atwell, were killed by enemy rocket fire and eight others were wounded. Following that attack, MajGen Sturdevant and MajGen Charles M. Gurganus, the overall Commander of Regional Command Southwest at the time of the attack, became the subjects of several investigations into accountability for the incident. On 30 September 2013, Gen James F. Amos, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, asked both to retire.
